The electric flame scallop, Ctenoides ales, is one of many fascinating invertebrates available for reef aquaria. However, since fish have all the personality and corals can at least be propagated in a myriad of ways, the invertebrates tend to take a backseat in the reef aquarium hobby as being purely ornamental. The electric flame scallop is not electric at all, but it makes the brilliant blue line display by rapidly beating a row of reflective blue cilia at the edge of their mantle. With Azoox reef tanks on the rise (and us beating you over the head with that fact), the filter feeding flame scallop and electric versions thereof might be due for a resurgence of popularity in the reefing hobby.
