Gramma dejongi is a sensational new species of Gramma which was first scientifically described last year. Since its unveiling, Gramma dejongi has garnered a lot of attention from the rare fish fanciers, alas, American fish lovers cannot legally obtain wild-sourced Gramma dejongi due to the ongoing embargo with communist Cuba; our only hope for getting Gramma dejongi in the U.S. is for some of the Benelux reefers who’ve obtained this fish to spawn them and succeed in raising them.
Enter Dietmar Schauer, owner of a 330 gallon reef tank which just happens to contain a courting pair of Gramma dejongi. We don’t yet have reports of any spawning events but since the classic royal gramma, Gramma loreto, has been spawned and its rearing is well documented, if Dietmar can get the Gramma dejongi to spawn, we may yet have some hope for captive bred Gramma dejongi sooner than later.
