The Old Woman anglefish, Pomacanthus rhomboides, is a rare and unusual species of large marine angelfish. Whereas nearly all angelfish are extremely colorful, especially in the Pomacanthus genus, the drab old woman angelfish is really the odd species out. The fact that the Old Woman angelfish lives primarily outside of typical fish collecting areas on the East Coast of Africa means that not even the affable juveniles are collected for the aquarium trade, at least not widely.
Sure there are some angelfish nuts who go ga-ga for any and all Pomacanthids, but in a line up the Old Woman will be the last to be picked for the fancy fish tank team. Nevertheless, we still have respect for the rare and unusual fish and even if it isn’t your typical reef fish with bombastic colors, we still think the juvenile and adult stages of Pomacanthus rhomboides look kinda “neat”.
