Hold on to your ionized particles folks because Luxim, the company that brought us LIFI and the light emitting plasma that has actually made it into the real world is about to get a power-up. Next week at LightFair in Philadelphia Luxim will be showing off their STA 60 LEP emitter which has twice the power of the STA41 series while the emitter is almost exactly the same size.
It is unclear how Luxim has achieved this wizardry of power density but we do know that at high power levels there is some thermal scavenging by the emitter to produce light more efficiently. Now if only the upstream components and cost don’t get bloated too much, next week we may see a 500 watt plasma light that is roughly the same size package as the Seashine and which may actually be competitive in performance and price with a 1000 watt metal halide.
