The Flow Accelerator from Pacific Coast Imports is not exactly a high performance eductor, but its wide retail distribution means that many hobbyist still mistake the device for a good substitute for a real penductor, a shorter version of the trumpet like nozzle. No matter because a new version of the PCI Flow Accelerator will include a removable spinning internal mechanism which should make it clear that this is not a real eductor for high water volumes in a large tank, although the new spinning device may create a desirable pulse of water flow that could work out for small and medium size reef tanks.
We first spotted the samples of the new version of the PCI Flow Accelerator at Reef Systems’ shop in Singapore, but pretty much dismissed the new feature until we spotted a video of the spinning feature in action. Although we have no expectations that the PCI Flow Accelerator to multiply pressurized water by four times like a real eductor, the spinning feature does produce a noticeable pulsing effect even if it reduces the overall flowrate. No word on when the new spinning/rotating/pulsing Flow Accelerator will be released to the general aquarium market, we doubt it will cost any more than the regular version and we wouldn’t be surprised if new PCI Flow Accelerators started shipping with the new feature without a noticeable change to the packaging. Big thanks to Morgan of Reef Systems for sharing pictures of the new device.
