The API Nexx filter is an extremely novel new take on aquarium filtration which borrows the best features of external power filters and canister filters and adds a few original tricks as well. At first glance the API Nexx filter appears to be just a canister filter with two small cartridges riding tandem but there’s a lot more going on with the API Nexx to make it truly self priming, modular and an interesting filtration device for a really wide range of applications.
Unlike a typical canister filter the API Nexx does not need to be primed because the pump driving it is inside the tank. Furthermore, a simple twist of that yellow carrying handle actually bypasses the filter and closes the feed loop from the water pump inside your tank so you can remove the filter housing without turning off power, and your fish continue to have their water aerated and flowed. The API Nexx only comes in one size but that’s ok because the modular API Nexx Extension allows you to piggyback more modules with an existing API Nexx filter while using the same pump.
The API Nexx looks like a really practical eternal filter which would be great for use on nano and medium sized reef tanks, fish tanks and especially quarantine; throw in a little surface skimming device and this API Nexx would really catch on with the saltwater crowd. No word on when the API Nexx will become available for purchase but some websites are already listing the API Nexx for about $100 and the API Nexx Extension for about $85, but these appear to be full suggested retail and most online dealers will let them go for less.
