You cannot imagine the little conniption we had when we spotted Jean Jaubert featured on the MACNA 2011 speaker roster. Dr. Jean Jaubert is one of the most influential aquarists in the history of reef building. Not only did Dr. Jaubert introduce the “Jaubert System” that uses a plenum underneath the sand, he has also been the director of the Monaco Oceanographic Museum for many years. The story we’ve heard is that the purple Stylophora aka ‘Milka Stylo’ was originally collected in the Red Sea decades ago and first grown out at the Monaco Oceanographic Museum before being distributed to Euro-reefers and then to the Americas.
The ‘Jaubert System’ was the method of reefkeeping when we began reefing in the mid nineties and it was the first significant advancement following wet dry filters and the Berlin Method. Although the ‘Jaubert System’ has fallen out of favor these days, it did lead to more ecological analysis of what goes on in our reef aquariums and many old reef tanks still use this method to this day.
