Goniopower is a new coral food developed by Justin Credabel to be easily consumed by Goniopora and Alveopora flowerpot corals. We are very proud of Justin’s new product and we’ll let him tell you what Goniopower is in his own words.
I am pleased to announce a new coral food, Two Little Fishies Justin Credabel’s Goniopower, debuting at this year’s MACNA. While developing the food the main issues I had early on were finding the proper food item in terms of feeding response, buoyancy, and food of the proper size. I whittled down the list of food items from all those that cause a strong feeding response to those ingredients that met the proper nutrition profile and were readily available (peppermint shrimp eggs and emerald crab larvae are hard to come by on a regular basis.) I also had to use ingredients that would settle onto the coral without floating away. I generally add two times the volume of water to the food, this gives a good consistency to Goniopower for feeding to most species of Goniopora, including the tiny polyped Goniopora stuchtburyi and the Goniopora cousins Alveopora. This consistency works well for other coral such as Echinophyllia that have a hard time with large sized food items. For large polyped varieties I will add a little less water for a thicker mix. This is good for Goniopora like G. stokesi and G. eclipsensis, as well as coral from other genera including Acanthastrea, Favia, and Scolymia.
I have been using this mix myself for the last 5 years, and have been using it at Exotic Reef Imports for all the species in our coral aquaculture program. I am excited to bring this food to the hobby, and hopefully spawn wider success for captive growth of Goniopora and Alveopora.
Justin’ Goniopower should be available within three to four weeks so we can all put it to the test.
