Parrotfish are pretty large reef fish so it is a little surprising to see the description of an entirely new species. Sparisoma choati hails from the tropical eastern Atlantic ocean off the coast of West Africa and it was distinguished from similar parrotfish species in the Caribbean and the coast of Brazil using genetic analysis. Terminal phase male Sparisoma choati has a reddish head and upper body, a yellow green ventral region and a tail peduncle and fin that fades to a dark greenish grey. The new parrotfish species Sparisoma choati from the eastern Atlantic is described by Rocha, Brito and Robertson in the January 2012 issue of Zootaxa.
