Bryaninops discus and B. spongicolus are two new fish from the Red Sea which will probably be followed by a lot more descriptions over the coming year. In preparation for the publication of the ultimate guide to Red Sea reef fishes, Fishes of the Red Sea, John Randall and his colleagues has been busy describing as many unknown fish from the region as possible.
Although Bryaninops discus and Bryaninops spongicolus are part of a group of nano reef gobies that is rarely seen in aquariums, Bryaninops and other nano Eviota and Trimma gobies are extremely abundant. If NPS, Azoox and soft coral tanks became more common we could see the slender Bryaninops gobies taking a larger role in the population of nano reef tanks.
Bryaninops discus and B. spongicolus are described by Suzuki, Bogorodsky and Randall in the January 2012 issue of Zootaxa.
