SeaLab No. 28 mineral blocks – anybody still use these?

Of course some people must be using the Sea-Lab No. 28 mineral replenishing blocks because they’re still making them and we still see them on the same spot on the shelf of the mom n’ pop fish stores. We haven’t used the Sea-Lab 28 blocks since we started reefing in 95 while trying to figure out what alaklinity actually is, but seeing these on the shelf got us curious as to what types of people still use these.

There’s no doubt that in reef aquarium with depleted calcium and alkalinity levels the mineral replenishing blocks would dissolve and bump up the chemistry levels. Our main question is what kind of reefers are still using these, how effective are they and how quickly and thoroughly do they work?

If the SeaLab No. 28 blocks could stabilize chemistry a little bit and mitigate pH and alkalinity swings then we’d be all in favor of supplementing our additive regime with the SeaLab blocks. You tell us, are these things kinda worth it or is it just the uber old timers growing leather corals and mushroom anemones who still cling to this old-school reefing technique?
