GHL is almost ready to release their ProfiLux 5.16 firmware update, with which they intend to add webcam support, along with better browser compatibility. Although the update is currently still in beta, you’ll soon be able to connect with your fish and coral through a webcam anywhere in the world. In the case that you are really impatient and are willing to deal with beta firmware the new firmware can already be downloaded from the GHL forums, although currently the new firmware is compatible with MJPEG only, rather than the default H.264 (aka MPEG 4).
This MJPEG means you will most likely need to find the MJPEG source link of your webcam before being able to connect it to the ProfiLux controller. As complicated as that may sound the source link can easily be found through websites such as iSpy Connect. Simply connect the webcam, enter your username and password if required and then select your preferred source (in this case MJPEG). We’re not sure if the GHL will support more video stream formats with the official release in the future, but we certainly hope so, as that would likely save the not-so tech savvy some serious headaches.
