Zap-Cal is a much-needed aquarium equipment cleaning product that is much more than a simple bath of acid to remove precipitated calcium, scale and lime deposits. Made by Crystal Clear Aquatics, Zap-Cal has its roots in a formula developed by the United States Navy to clean biofouling from the hulls of ships and if it’s good enough for the military, it’s good enough to clean aquarium pumps and similar devices.
ZapCal is reported to work extremely fast but unlike Muriatic/Sulfuric Acid, ZapCal is non toxic and produces no noxious fumes. Zap Cal is safe for use with plastic, ceramic, rubber, pvc, titanium and short term use with stainless steel and should do a fine job of cleaning our aquarium water pumps with components made up of all of the above. We haven’t yet tried ZapCal but we hear its the bee’s knees for cleaning calcium encrusted pumps and we’ve got a couple mixing pumps that are definitely ready for some servicing.
