One rather lucky diver narrowly escaped being swallowed by a 49-foot Bryde’s whale off the coast of South Africa recently. The diver, Rainer Schimpf, was in the water off the coast of Port Elizabeth watching the sardine run when the whale rose, rushing from the depths below to catch a mouthful of sardines.
As you can see in this video, Schimpf was caught off guard because, according to Barcroft TV, the “giant mammal swerved at the last moment to avoid smacking directly into him”—but the water displaced still sent him flying.”
