The Illumagic Style LED Mini and full fledged Fixture caught our eye at Interzoo 2014. Particularly once we learned about some of the distinguished features put into these lights. The Style Mini is a single cluster of LEDs in a square pendant, and then there’s the fixture with 6 clusters. Each cluster contains a Neutral White, Cool White, Cyan, Deep Blue, Violet, and ‘Near UV’ diode. The LED’s are separated into 3 controllable channels. Total wattage of each cluster is 25-watts.
The Mini pendant has a nice tank mount, allowing you to pivot and tilt the light. Looking at the internals, we were surprised that the 60-degree optics were made of a soft material. It turned out to be silicone. Illumagic says they went with silicone because it transmits more light than plastic. The silicone optics also have a higher thermal tolerance, up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
It gets more interesting with the 6 cluster fixture. Not only do you have 3 channels on each COB-LED to manipulate spectrum, but you can program each of the 6 clusters separately in their fixture. For example, you could adjust each cluster towards a different spectrum. You may find yourself wanting to highlight a coral color under one of the clusters. You can also simulate different light transitions across the tank in this manner.
If you have multiple fixtures, they can be set to a “Master-Slave” wireless mode. This makes programming multiple fixtures less complicated because you only need to deal with programming the master unit. There is also an optional RF controller with display available. While the fixture has a smooth finish, the sides can be removed to expose a track where you can mount the Style Mini onto the 6 cluster fixture. This would be nice if someone wanted to add some angular light and eliminate more shadows.
Hopefully we get a chance to check these out in the USA. [Illumagic]
