For your daily dose of absolute cuteness, visitors and staff at the Monterey Bay Aquarium were given quite a surprise when they discovered a wild sea otter gave birth in the aquarium’s Great Tide Pool yesterday.
According to the aquarium’s blog, a wild female sea otter had been using the protected basin of our Great Tide Pool to rest from the winter storms the last few days. On Saturday night as the aquarium was closing up, they spotted here again making her way into the tide pool for the night. The concerned staff was wondering if all was well and on Sunday all was revealed as the mother gave birth sometime in the night or early morning. It was around 8:30 a.m. when staff saw the pup resting on Momma’s belly as she groomed the baby.
