The new Edelkrone StandPLUS is one of those inventions where you wonder why somebody didn’t come up with it earlier. Many of us in the hobby are just natural tinkerers and have learned over the years sometimes you have to just leave the tank alone and find something else to do with your hands and mind, so photography is a perfect outlet.
Whether we snap pictures of our tank, when we’re out at shows, at public aquariums, visiting an awe-inspiring tank, or just on a hike, having a camera around is almost second nature to many. But lugging around a tripod and fiddling with it to get the right height, angle and adjustments isn’t a whole lotta fun.
This is where the Edelkrone StandPLUS shines. You pop in your camera and have a nice wide handle to carry it around. When you want to snap a pic, just open the stand and use the handle to simply move the StandPlus to the desired height and position. It folds up to just 20 in. long and opens up to about 5 ft. tall.
What’s nice about this is you don’t need to loosen and tighten knobs to make adjustments allowing you to position the camera up and down and even forward and back, making it a great option for getting shots around an aquarium. In the demo video you can see these hinges are supporting a full DSLR with a good sized lens, but there is likely some weight limit to what it can withstand.
Does this mean we can ditch the traditional tripod? No, but this is a great solution for many situations, particularly for indoor shooting on a flat surface. Getting out in nature, we probably still want to have a trustworthy lightweight tripod we can easily set up on rough or uneven terrain.
The Edelkrone StandPLUS hasn’t yet been released and we’re pretty sure there will be a bit of sticker shock at the retail price, but for those that take a lot of pictures, it might be well worth the investment.
