The aquarium hobby really got its start with light emitting diode lighting through the use of PAR 38 LED spotlights. This form factor of LEDs was our first three or four LED lights and of all the brands we ever tried, no company made a better PAR 38 spotlight than Volx Japan.
Where many companies were content to rebadge off the shelf heatsinks and use mid-grade LED components, Volx Japan really blazed a trail with their Grassy LeDio line of LED spotlights. The RX072 is the newest series of Grassy LeDio PAR 38 spotlights from Volx Japan and these take up the mantle of colorful spotlighting in a way that no other company really has.
Featuring an all new heatsink design with passive flow through cooling and the latest Cree XLamps LEDs, the RX072 feature the greatest range of LED colors we’ve ever seen in this form factor. The five different models of Grassy LeDio RX072 spotlights range from the super warm, reddish Sunset model, to the super blue Deep model that is populated with four colors of blue diodes.
We took each of the five new Grassy LeDio RX072 for the proverbial spin on a combo rock of zoanthids and shrooms to see how the different color spectrums make these corals look. At 14 watts per spotlight, the RX072 are really designed to be a beam of color-accentuating light, highlighting the unique colors of certain corals, and complimenting existing lighting setups in most reef tanks.
With our best modern, color-controllable LED fixtures being able to dial in the spectrum over the entire aquarium to just about any desired level, it might be hard to see the function of spotlights like the Grassy LeDio RX072. But if you have a favorite coral or group of corals that you really want to see highlight in your reef display, there’s a color combination of Grassy LeDio spotlights that can really make that coral pop.
