Atomic Aquatics – How Things Work
Have you ever wonder about the inner workings of your scuba diving equipment? Atomic Aquatics has an informative section on their website titled How Things Work which features some of their signature equipment.
How Things Work looks at how regulators, fins, snorkels, and masks function including some of the Atomic patented design features. The videos are short computer generated clips which illustrate technical aspects of dive equipment.
We found the videos which feature regulators to be the most informative. Unless you are trained to service a regulator, visualizing how a regulator regulates air flow is somewhat a mystery.
Regulators are designed to deliver breather air to a diver every time you inhale. Inside the 2nd stage of a regular (the part that you have in your mouth), a first lever opens and closes a seal which connects the regulator mouthpiece to the regulator hose.
Every breath you take pulls the lever and lets air flow into the mouthpiece. The top of the level touches the inside of your mouthpiece so that when you press down on the purge button the level opens and a burst of air enters.
While most divers are content with leaving the details to a professional, understanding how a regulator works can bring you a deeper appreciating for your dive equipment. If you are curious like we are, you will enjoy clicking through and exploring this feature.
