The carbon fiber backplate is a very welcome announcement from technical diving company Halcyon. This new backplate is significantly lighter than contemporary backplates, with a solid carbon fiber construction that doesn’t compromise on strength.
Where a standard backplate might weigh six pounds for a steel model, or five pounds for an aluminum version, the new Halcyon carbon fiber backplate clocks in at just around two pounds. This new backplate built of the modern material is a welcome reduction in the weight needed to travel with, but you’ll have to compensate for your underwater buoyancy in other ways.
Halcyon has announced the carbon fiber backplate in two versions, a standard backplate for $249 and a ‘deluxe’ version with integrated single tank adapter and strap cinches for $349.
