LEDs have gotten so bright and so efficient it is now possible to power models simply using seawater. The Mizusion Saltwater powered LED lantern is a new camping light that lights up only when you add saltwater to it.
This is not an aquarium light, and of course the energy comes from a stored fuel-cell but the technology exists. A single dose of seawater will catalyze the reaction of the magnesium fuel cell for up to 80 hours, and replacement magnesium refills can be purchased separately.
It is unclear how much this technology can be optimized to be brighter and longer lasting. But still, the thought of being able to light a reef tank by feeding the light with seawater from the tank is intriguing nonetheless. [Japan Trend Shop]
