Canary Scuba Device
A little birdy told us about this revolutionary device called the Canary. The Canary device, which is still in the design phase, promises a quick way to keep an eye on fellow divers tank pressure.
The Canary device attaches to a divers second stage and lights up to display tank pressure. While the diver cannot see their own Canary display the usefulness of this device is for divemasters or dive instructors keeping an eye on their group of divers.

How It Works
It essentially works like a fuel gauge, with the lights turning off one at a time as the tank pressure decreases. In a visual world, the Canary device makes it easier for divers to communicate tank pressure to a buddy or dive instructor.
For new divers scuba diving can be an overwhelming experience. With so many new things to look at, unless an instructor or divemaster is reminding you to check your pressure gauge time can really fly.
The Team
The Canary device is the brainchild of Australian Industrial Design Graduates Steven Buhagiar and Gus Bellekens. The team wanted to design a piece of scuba equipment which aims to improve safety and buddy communications whilst diving.
While there is still little information available or actual prototype pictures we are excited about the future of Canary. The device could be a fantastic aid for dive guides and provide new divers with an added safety measure.
One interesting tidbit we found on their website was a line that reads, “the first version of The Canary was born: a system of diver safety that linked to a social network and uploaded live diver data!”
All of the information we have come across so far has been focused on the Canary as a purely visual display of divers tank pressure. Could the Canary be hiding more? We are seeing an influx of “connected” scuba equipment in an attempt to unify users into a collective social group, could Canary Scuba be next in line.
We are curious to see how the Canary will work. Will it be connected to the first stage with a HP hose or will it work with a wireless transmitter? What will be the cost of Canary, will it be a consumer add-on or will they partner with a regulator manufacturer. We will keep you updated.
