TUNZE Care Bacter is a bacterial supplement to help keep your aquarium clean and in biological balance. Care Bacter is made up of several strains of non-pathogenic bacteria on a fine gravel substrate powder that work together to help keep your aquarium clean and free of excess waste.
Bacteria are a true workhorse in nature, but many times they can become limited in number and types in our aquariums. By adding Care Bacter, you can improve biological function and diversity while significantly reducing algae and sediments.
Care Bacter has a few strains that perform various tasks. For example, one strain is designed to aid in the complete removal of dead organic components in the aquarium. It also helps take up the resulting nitrate that results from this biological function while also absorbing phosphate. The bacteria can then be digested by your coral or filter feeders or removed through protein skimming. Besides losing detritus and organic sludge, you can expect to see a reduction in green and filamentous algae.
The second bacteria strain is used against pathogenic bacteria of the genus Vibrio, which are extremely harmful to an aquarium biotope. Through this, Care Bacter protects your inhabitants from pathogen bacteria, and also helps in during the rather stressful time when they are acclimating to the aquarium. For your LPS and SPS coral such, Tunze touts Care Bacter as helping to significantly reduces the risk of a rapid tissue necrosis (RTN).
Finally, Care Bacter significantly enhances the biofilm in the aquarium, helping supports certain types other beneficial organisms. The side effect from this is your aquarium glass remain clean even longer.
While it sounds pretty robust and the thought of bacteria might creep you out, don’t worry it is 100% non-pathogenic bacteria for both people and the environment. TUNZE also notes there is no possibility of overdosing, but does recommend dosing with a “shock vaccination” to get the desired outcomes faster over the course of two weeks before settling into maintenance mode. A 40 ml jar will run about $30 USD.
