The VariaFlow is a brand new controllable return pump which Hydor showed off for the first time in New Orleans this weekend. The demo model of the VariaFlow was a prototype with 3D printed parts all around, but it shows a clearly unique design and styling on the pump, fittings and pump controller.
If you’re a keen eyed reef aquarium gear head you may have noticed we haven’t yet mentioned anything about DC power because the VariaFlow is in fact a controllable AC powered pump. Hydor went the route of AC control because they believe they can deliver better performance with less power, and forego the bulky and expensive power supply in the process.
Performance specifications are far from finalized, I do seem to recall a maximum flow rate of 5,000 liters per hour, and adjustable down to 20% output, but this pump is a ways away from having pricing or a release date .
Hydor is one of the last major aquarium pump manufacturers to throw their hat into the ring of variable flow return pumps. With the announcement of the VariaFlow by Hydor, the age of fully controllable water pumps is fully upon us.
