The Octo S-130 is a brand new protein skimmer introduced at the CoralVue booth at MACNA with a lot of swanky features to make it stand out. It was more than five years ago when we saw the first ‘Wine Glass’ protein skimmer and the new Octo S-130 takes some of those design elements and runs with it.
The curvaceous Octo S-130 with its red accents now is more reminiscent of a classic coca-cola bottle but this protein skimmer isn’t riding on looks alone. First off the entire assembly of the Octo S-130 is easily disconnected with quick fittings all over the body – a fitting that connects the body to the cup is an integrated silencer.
The bubble diffuser plate is an interesting new molded shape with a slightly dome shaped surface but the really neat part is in the water level control. The adjustment dial is no longer a continuous screw adjustment or bayonnet outflow pipe, but a form of plunger which is adjusted by a clicking dial.
I gotta say that the Octo S-130 could get by on looks alone but closer inspection reveals some thoughtfully implemented new and welcome features. While it has a standard AC needle wheel pump, we imagine this skimmer should be able to handle up to 100 gallons and it will be priced at $299 when it becomes available in the future.
