We’re not the biggest softies when it comes to fundraiser but today we want to share a very special cause with you. Watson Mariculture has been culturing giant clams in Palau for decades, with Thomas Watson being one of the pioneers of clam farming since the beginning.
Part of the mission of Watson Mariculture is to reseed wild stocks of giant clams and to date they’ve ‘released’ thousands of Tridacna clams of many different species. They’ve done this out of their own pocket but after all these years, they are just now reaching out to the public for support in their giant clam restocking efforts.
We can’t even count the number of projects that restore coral reefs by growing and outplanting corals. But the proposal by Watson Mariculture is one of the first private projects we know of which is having a significant positive impact on wild populations of local clams.
If you saw our video of the Palau Giant Clam Farm then you know how integral Giant Clams are to the local culture and economy in Palau. Of all the coral reef regions I’ve visited no other place has so much abundance and diversity of giant clams as Palau.
By supporting Watson Mariculture’s giant clam restocking project we’ve ALL got a rare opportunity to help keep Palau’s reef ‘rich’ with giant clams. If you want to help, visit the Watson Mariculture crowdfunding page on facebook, any and all contributions will have a direct impact on putting farmed clams onto wild coral reefs of Palau.
