If there’s one reason to travel the world in search of visiting reef tanks in different country it’s to get out of our comfort zone and see what the reef world is like outside the digital echo chamber. While in Taipei Taiwan I visited VP Corals, one of the few stores in the world really specializing in high end corals and really neat reef aquariums.
Vincent Wong the owner of VP Corals was kind enough to welcome me after hours and well into the night to see and thoroughly document both floors of his wonderful store. This LFS had not one but two really special and original reef tanks that are featured in two separate videos, the first of which is his SPS coral aquarium.
This bare bottom tank uses a minimal amount of branching rock to create a really dynamic aquascape with plenty of places to mount corals and frags, while allowing unimpeded water flow through the entire display. The aquascape is not the only noteworthy feature of the VP Corals SPS reef tank as it uses metal halides & T5 fluorescent lights, what some might consider ‘legacy’ aquarium lighting, and it has a really intense power control center to manage the abundant electrical devices.
Vincent feeds this tank very heavily, doses a lot and also does periodic nearly 100% water changes with natural seawater to manage the nutrients. The video of the VP Corals SPS reef tank is a wonderful look into the unique Asian style of reef keeping and if you like this video, you’ll definitely want to subscribe to the Reef Builders channel on YouTube as the next second video from this awesome shop is even more, shall we say, videogenic.
