As the temperatures drop we start thinking about ways to keep our tanks warm, but doesn’t it just seem like yesterday when we were thinking about ways to keep them cool??? As we contemplate this, we bring you our next edition of the Friday Smorgasbord…enjoy!
Arowana Madness
Here is an interesting video from CIPS in China showcasing some of the most amazing (and expensive) arowana fish you’ll ever see!
Too Close for Comfort
Whales are curious creatures and this video shows what can happen if you get too close for comfort. Now don’t be too alarmed about random boaters getting close to the whales, this video is of a the Lifeforce Ocean Friends boat and that was monitoring the whales (with the engines off when this happened) in waters off Comox Harbour, BC, Canada.
Let’s Talk About ….
Let’s talk about poop. Did you know sea cumbers poop is super important to our reefs? First off, what comes out is actually cleaner that what goes in as they digest organic material and eject everything else. The cleaner sand can help prevent algal blooms and can buffer the water from the effects of ocean acidification.
Brrrrrrr! It’s cold out there!
As temperatures start dropping, we start thinking about the colder side of the ocean. Unlike the tropical reefs, the water of the Southern Ocean range from –2 to 10°C or 28 to 50°F — so how does sea life survive? This is what BBC Unplugged looks to examine in this video.
