REEFlections Rock is a line of live rock replicas from Blue Ribbon, a company with an extensive and growing catalog of aquarium ornaments. Part of the Exotic Environments line, the REEFlections Rock is unlike any man made live rock in that it doesn’t use any ‘rock’ per se so no aragonite, no cement, it’s all inert, resin based material.
The reef aquarium hobby loves its Live Rock, Real Reef Rock, LifeRock and many others but these do have a limited lifetime to some degree, as they get overgrown outside and in. This is of less concern to the average hobbyist but if you tend to play or mess with your aquascape more often, the resin that makes up the Blue Ribbon Exotic Environments REEFlections Rock can be washed in a simple acid bath to be new again.
Besides their natural appearance and longer usable life than regular rock, the REEFlections Rock is actually designed to be stackable, with small openings in strategic points of the rock so they can be securely pinned together. We haven’t gotten to see how this works, but there should be a range of aquascapes possible by using any of the five different designs that range from 7″ to 11″ in overall length.
It was our good luck to encounter a batch of these new REEFlections Rocks at a local fish store called Fish Den which had these priced between $20 and $35 but we have also seen that the rocks are available in bundles of three or ten. The natural rock inspired REEFlections Rock are hollow inside so they are lightweight, easy to handle, and provide a ton of internal space for water volume as well as small critters and fish to hide.
It’s been a really long time since we’ve seen realistic aquarium ‘rock’ decorations made from resin but we’re glad to see Blue Ribbon give it another go and offering reefers yet another superior alternative to classic wild harvested live rock. Now we just need to see what an actual reef tank looks like using the REEFlections Rock and what is possible using the unique, built-in pegging system.
