There is so much to talk about in the reef aquarium hobby these days that we simply can’t manage to get it all out there. Between our countless articles, youtube videos, and social media posts we still feel that there is a gap in the reef aquarium topics we want to talk about so we’re launching a new format fill this specific need.
In the pilot episode of our yet-to-be-named reef aquarium talk show we sit down with one of our oldest and most experienced reefing comrades, Mark van der Wal. With a background in reef aquariums since the 90s, an education in biology, and over 20 years of experience seeing the reef aquarium landscape in terms of animals, equipment, technology and methods Mark is the perfect co-host counterpart to take a deep dive into the reef aquarium world, from the mainstream to the fringe.
In this first hour long video Mark and I touch upon the history of the hobby, some of our first experiences with coral pests and coral fragging, dabble in some aesthetics of his next reef tank, and wind through a myriad of other topics including Gyre pumps, macroalgae scrubbers, feeding and nutrients and probably a few more things. We both share similar philosophies in reef keeping but have drastically different approaches as to how we achieve a healthy thriving reef aquarium.
The video and audio quality is passable but we firmly believe that in time we’ll be able to take some deep dives into all aspects of the aquarium hobby and offer up some real talk about reef tanks that we hope will be both entertaining and informative to our viewers. We’re aiming to do this super reef nerd discussion on a weekly basis and we left plenty of topics on the table for our next episode wherein we’ll be discussing a brand new reef aquarium light so make sure to stay tuned, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the candid reef banter.
