Everyone likes a versatile LED mounting system but Illumagic may have just created the most versatile by demonstrating how their RMS can be built into an actual aquarium canopy. The existing RMS is essentially an extruded metal profile the type of which is common in industrial applications around the world.
Its strong, height adjustable, can be cut to length and of course, its purpose in these circumstances is to mount any of the Illumagic lights from the X Series to the X4 to the Vitamini to the piXel. But the industrial background also means that the individual mounts can be joined together to form a frame, and then clad with metal panels which the engineers at Illumagic have made height adjustable and thus, granting access to the aquarium below.
At first, we thought the rendered prototype was a motorized canopy, but now it just looks like it can be opened manually. It’s shown sat on top of a rimless tank and would serve to prevent light spill and any jumpers, but as practical as it is, we can’t see it gracing any living rooms until it gets a few aesthetic tweaks and was made way shallower, as the top-heavy look destroys any rimless tank’s elegance and looks part boxed-in metal halide canopy from the last century, and part server tower.
The material and concept look sound however so we hope they will take this further by actually making a full aquarium stand from the RMS material which would then maybe lend itself to full DIY custom metal frame stand, RMS and canopy builds, and not just to house Illumagic equipment.
