The Filtertronic is one of the newest automatic filter roll coming soon to the aquarium hobby from the automation specialists at Focustronic. We first heard of this new automatic filter roll in fall of 2020 and it appears that we won’t have to wait two full years since it was announced to get our hands on the Filtertronic.
The first generation of automatic filter rolls such as those by ClariSea and Deltec were purpose built utilitarian aquarium devices with the sole purpose of advancing the filter fleece as it becomes clogged and dirty. The Filtertronic is designed to be a little more intelligent with smart features and wireless communication with the automatic water testing Mastertronic to help control nutrients.
The small footprint of the Filtertronic and flexible mounting height makes it easy to install into a wide range of reef aquarium sumps and it’s been specifically tested to fit into all in one setups as small as the Red Sea 250. The flexibility extends to the swappable water inlets and the Filtertronic has a slide out roller for easy change of the fleece material which is up to 100 yards in length.
Some other small amenities include black acrylic to prevent algae from growing inside, there’s a built-in media basket, a sump water level sensor in addition to all splash proof electronic components. The diminutive 245mm x 217mm x 500mm enclosure is rated for up to 10,000 liters of water per hour, 2,600 gph or almost a thousand gallons more than what was initially projected when the Filtertronic was first unveiled.
Built-in indicator LEDs can notify users of various different operational modes at a glance including normal, end of roll, online/offline and any abnormal water levels in or outside the sump. We’re hearing that Focustronic will start shipping the Filtertronic in the third quarter of this year which could mean early July or late September and the only thing left for us to do is figure out the retail price and test it out for ourselves to see how it hold up to the currently available automatic filter rolls.
