We recently visited Norway and had the opportunity to visit one of the most enthusiastic reef aquarists in the country, Tomas Kaumer. It was a bit surprising to enter an unassuming home tucked in the Norwegian countryside to find an outstanding mixed reef featured in today’s video.
Tomas emphasizes his priority is for the corals to thrive, and the tank showcases a diverse collection ranging from Acros to Zoanthids. The selection of fish he has curated over the years utilizes many species which help manage pests and nuisance algae, including tangs as well as many wrasses.
Tomas’ passion for reef keeping doesn’t stop at his display tank, he also runs a home-based business called “Millepora Corals” to provide frags and colonies to local hobbyists. Tomas is able to grow much of what he sells at home, however his supply is enriched by occasional shipments from both Australia and Indonesia.
The relatively low number of saltwater aquarists in Norway inspires those who are in the hobby to form a tight knit community of support. Tomas not only provides livestock to fellow hobbyists but also is the host of possibly the only reef aquarium event in Norway called Reef Meet.
We were absolutely honored being invited to Tomas’ home for an in depth tour of his beautiful display, and getting behind the scenes into a home coral farm in Norway. We wish Tomas the best with all his reefing endeavors and hope to pay him and his gorgeous reef another visit in the future.
