If there’s one good thing to come out of the modern reef hobby, it’s Bounce mushrooms. Not commonly seen in nature, Rhodactis spp. sometimes swell up select vesicles in a way that we find attractive, and if those vesicles turn big, bouncy, and brightly colored while in our care, so much the better.
This latest stunning example comes to us fresh from Ultra Coral Australia and with its uniformity of lemon yellow vesicles and green base it reminds us of a flower, and we think it’s exceptional. This as-yet-unnamed Original Grower mushroom only occurs under LED lighting that’s rich in the blue spectrum, but when a bullseye does bounce like this one, its value skyrockets.
Best of all is that apart from that blue lighting, the basic care of this Corallimorph is the same as for any mushroom and if it reproduces asexually that identical DNA could and should produce more. Apart from the high price, we love that there are aquarists who are just dedicated to Bounce shrooms and promise to look way more carefully the next time we pass a Rhodactis, for its inner Bounce potential.
