We stumbled across this excellent infographic by Marine BioDiversity of Yucatán on Amphipods. We knew they could be found pretty much everywhere, from freshwater to saltwater, under rocks on beaches to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, but we didn’t know there were 10,000 species of Amphipods, with 950 species in Mexico alone. That’s nearly as many amphipods in Mexico as there are fish species in the whole of the Atlantic Ocean!
They take on many roles in the ocean from being bottom dwelling to pelagic, parasites to detritivores, and their role in pollinating the flowers of seagrasses has earned them the memorable title of the “bees of the sea.”
We’re bowled over by the quality of illustration and information on this infographic, and the best part is that Marine BioDiversity of Yucatán has produced others on anemones, ascidians, bivalves, cephalopods, corals, and more, as well as posters and books. What a rich resource! Visit their website to find that and the other great work they do at https://www.bdmy.org.mx/.
