The salt market just got interesting as Reef Factory teased us with a new format in reef aquarium salt – a tablet. There are lots of ways to add or make up saltwater for your aquarium but in all our years in the hobby, we haven’t seen a solid salt tablet before. A fixed size and weight of salt tablet will be able to make a measured amount of saltwater when mixed with RO, which in this case is 10 liters/2.64 gallons, and that makes it quick, easy, and convenient for partial water changes or for filling nano reef tanks from scratch.
We have long been a proponent of small salt batches versus large ones, as it helps to de-risk manufacturer-stated parameter anomalies and in the case of a tablet, settlement too. However, a tablet may have its own manufacturing challenges, being hard enough to stay in one piece during transportation yet soft enough to dissolve cleanly and quickly in the water.
Each tablet will be 400 grams in weight, and the R&D team at Reef Factory is shooting for numbers of Kh 7.7, Calcium 440ppm, and Magnesium of 1350ppm, but all that, as well as pricing, will be confirmed at launch. Reef Factory already has its own ICP machine so we are optimistic about the batch testing and the tablets hitting the required numbers. And being Reef Factory, the salt and water changes will all be integrated into the Smart Reef platform, for recording test results and as part of an automatic water changing regime.
We’ll bring you more info as it becomes available.
