Late last week Bobby Moon of Kush Corals got in an extremely unique batch of disco’s. Sporting a beige/yellow base with green highlights and blue/purple splotchy vesicles/pseudo tentacles these mushrooms are some of the nicest I have seen. They adeptly call them “purple urkel’s”
Around two years ago a similar strain landed which I saw referred to as “eggs” disco’s. While the “eggs” stain has the same base coloration and pattern it lacks the vesicles and slight blue and orange secondary colors on Kush’s piece.
In my experience after working at a shop that got a rock of the “eggs” variation they tend to grow quite slow compared to other discosoma additionally they appear distinct phenotypically from many discos we see thus they may be a subspecies that is uncommon in the industry. Those that know more about coral taxonomy would be able to clarify this better.
It will be interesting to see how this strain continues to develop in captivity. I suspect with the correct conditions the vesicles could further develop leading to a “bounce” variation. We will be getting one of these for the Reef Builders studio and putting it in the new revamped “shroom room”. Hopefully one day we will have a rock full of this strain. Stay tuned to see how it grows overtime.
