Even with the growing uncertainty about the economy there is certainly no shortage of Rich Man’s fish. In the last couple weeks a couple of sources received a handful Australian Mcculochi clowns stateside which are going for no less than $2000. Aquarium Concepts of Dublin CA just received the third batch of Clarion angelfish for the year. The 200 specimens of H. clarionensis will likely retail for $2000-3000 although many of these will likely make their way to other countries where their price will multiply. And for the coup-de-gras we have heard of availability of a duo of the extremely rare and very deepwater Odontanthias fuscipinnis, relative of the now relatively common blotchy anthias, Odontanthias borbonius. The pair of fish which were collected in Hawaii have a wholesale price in the $1500 neighborhood although Glassbox reported on a pair of ‘Fuscis’ in Japan a couple weeks back which were valued at about $9000. Clearly the processes which made these extreme rarities available to the trade have been in the works for months if not longer but we’ll take even this slightest ray of hope as a sign that the world economy is not as apocalyptic as the squawkbox is telling us.
