The number of articles in this month’s issue of Advanced Aquarist may be lean but the heavy hitting write-ups by Dana Riddle and Ken Feldsman are each comparable to an entire chapter on the topics. Once again Dana blows our minds with more than we could ever want to know; this time it’s about coral colors, the specific pigments that make them look a certain way and what encourages their development. And in what is sure to be a controversial piece, Dr. Ken Feldsman lays out some groundwork for developing a system for testing skimmer performance in a reproduceable manner using Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). We don’t know what BSA is exactly but it sounds really gross. The Feldsman paper produces some interesting results which are sure to be the center of protein skimmer performance discussions for a long time to come. And finally, the Photon Man himself, Dr. Sanjay Joshi offers some data for you to assess what is the best metal halide reflector for your application.
