The Tropical Eden line of reef-collected aragonite substrates went “live†with its new Aragavive live aragonite sand. The Aragavive line comes in four flavors, depending on how fine or how large you like your substrate and you have to love their creative naming convention. Grain sizes vary from a fine .5mm to a larger 3.5mm depending on the one you choose. The AragaSnow sand is the finest of the bunch, with sugar-fine grains around .5mm, the MiniFlakes are described to look like tiny bits of breadcrumbs measuring around 2mm and the grandaddy is the oatmeal-sized 3.5 mm flakes. If you are undecided you can always go for the RubyReef a mixed grain variety pack. Aragavive is hand collected from offshore, remote islands and packed in a “special blue tray†to help keep all those good sandbed fauna in place and happy until they find their new home in your tank. The company claims the sand contains a broad spectrum of bacteria found in natural coral reef sandbeds and are boosted with specially selected strains of symbiotic marine bacteria and microbes for complete and efficient nitrification and denitrification. The Aragavive line is a little pricier than other live sands on the market, $19.99 for a 10lb bag over at Premium Aquatics, but this live collected sand might be worth the premium.
