The diminutive crosshatch bass, Serranus luciopercanus, is one of several deepwater gems which was recently harvested from the depths of Curacao. Like so many others, the crosshatch bass made it’s way one of Japan’s rare fish specialty stores, Blue Harbor.
We were very excited to share with you a blurry image of the only picture of a living specimen but now we truly have reason to get excited with these much clearer pictures of this extremely rare and little known species. Although the crosshatch is much rarer than the Lipogramma species, it is almost completely unknown so whereas the Lipogramma sold for $2000-3000 a piece, the crosshatch bass likely sold in the sub-$1000 neighborhood. We find this little fish species to be fascinating, like a chalk bass with no color, but then again we have a thing for white colored reef fish.
