The new magnetic probe holder from Avast marine is about as simple as these kinds of aquarium accessories get; a magnetic coupling holds the main bracket at a desired level in the tank or sump, and three compression fittings secure the probes. Two of the compression fittings are 1/2 inch in diameter for your standard issue pH and ORP probes and the smaller center compression fitting is 1/4 inch in diameter, presumably to fit the size of a decent temperature probe or an effluent line from top off or calcium reactor. The configuration of the Avast Marine magnetic probe holder is very similar to the Eshopps probe holder, though we’re pretty sure either one will do the job just as well.
There’s not really much that can be done the functionality of a device with the sole purpose of holding sticks in place, but Avast has at least departed from the glassy clear acrylic fabrication to the matte gray finish of the PVC, making the entire unit a little easier on the eyes. Furthermore, the compression fittings allow for a smaller footprint than say the typical nylon screws which fasten perpendicularly to the probe. The Avast Marine magnetic probe holder is not yet on their website, we expect it will cost around $35, give or take a few bucks.
