We first shared pictures of Shikorosango’s 3700 gallon reef tank about a year ago. In that time his massive Turbinaria colonies have become gargantuan in size and now the whole reef aquarium looks like a slice of a real reef. You know your reef tank is balling when a) your tank is large enough for a school of moorish idols, b) when your corals are so huge they obscure all the live rock, c) you have to get into your tank for aquascaping or cleaning the glass or d) all of the above.
In the case of Shikorosango’s ginormous reef tank this aquarium is pimping on all levels, not to mention the heart-attack-inducing electricity bill he must get for the 6000 watts of halide powering this reef tank. Replacing some of that light with LEDs would be great especially for the blues but getting anywhere near this quantity and quality of full spectrum light from LEDs would hardly be elegant – sometimes if you want to grow the heck out of some shallow water corals in a tank this large you just gotta go high intensity discharge. Lots more pictures of Shikorosango’s massive reef tank on his blog.
