The Lytro light field camera just started shipping to pre-orders last week and we couldn’t wait to take ours for a spin on the wonderful world of reef tanks, corals and fish aquariums. In case you haven’t heard, the Lytro is a new type of camera that doesn’t take photographs, it takes a snapshot of the entire light field, resulting in a type of digital image that can be refocused after the fact. For some people this means that they can snap away and worry about focal points later, but for us it means producing dramatic living images of our favorite aquarium animals.
We’re just getting the hang of the unique Lytro light field camera, but as you can see there is definitely some cool possibilities when capturing the depth of really long and deep reef aquariums. Just click around the living pictures embedded here to bring in focus the different subjects in the frame, it is soooo cool!
