The Eheim Skim 350 is a neat little filter that skims the surface of the aquarium to filter out dust, oils and debris to keep the surface layer clean and allow for proper gas exchange. Over time oils and fats from food and organisms combine with dust and other debris to form layers of film over the top of the water’s surface that cut down on the clarity and inhibits a proper gas exchange, so having a handy filter like the Eheim Skim 350 helps to keep the top sparkling and the oxygen flowing. The surface water is drawn into the filter and the pollutants are removed and collected in a filtration sponge that can be cleaned and reused. The Eheim Skim 350 can be adjusted by a simple slide switch on the side to decrease flow and only consumes around 5 watts of power, so there isn’t excessive power draw or excess heat that gets put into the system. This is also a great idea for emergency power systems to keep the surface clean to allow of better oxygenation when your main circulation and filtration systems go offline while adding a nominal amount of flow. The Eheim Skim 350 is retailing around €25 (about $30 USD).
