The JNS ConeS protein skimmers are an interesting take on the long road to make our skimmers less and less turbulent. By now you should have already noticed that the JNS ConeS skimmers has the namesake of having multiple cones in its construction. Not only is the body a conical shape but the diffuser plate looks like a launch pad of little conical nozzles.
Apparently JNS figured that if the cone body is good for reducing turbulence inside the body then perhaps adding conical rises to every hole in the diffuser plate would also further reduce turbulence. The concept sounds good in theory, and it sure does make the skimmers look cool, and it probably aslo goes some ways to reducing turbulence in the skimmer body, but who knows how much real-world impact on performance we can expect from this diffuser plate modification.
The newly redesigned cons-spout diffuser plate is featured in three new skimmer models from JNS, all are in-sump style models powered by their own Shark pump. The smallest of the JNS ConeS skimmers is an adorable little number with a playful rocket-ship appearance. Further adding to the cuteness JNS has added a handle to the skimmer cup making it “easier” to handle and pour out the skimmate.
Nothing is known about pricing or availability on the JNS ConeS skimmers but if there’s any margin of improvement in skimming by simply adding conical nozzles to the diffuser plate, we might be looking at the future appearance of turbulence-reducing enhancements. [JNS]
