As much as we think we know about the deep sea, having taken oodles of courses in marine science, ecology and biology, it’s still hard for us to imagine and picture the sheer diversity of creatures living down there. Once in a while we get a glimpse into the abyss like the recent video of the giant squid, or a visit to a particular deep sea shoal but this montage goes one step further.
With their extensive work deep below the surface, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institue is a frequent feature on the pages of Reef Builders. This latest video from MBARI is a particularly rewarding one since it is a montage of a variety of different deep sea creatures. Whereas most deep sea vids animate creatures of the depths from temperate areas, this video shows off what’s hiding in the deep waters of Indonesia.
Since Indonesia is part of the center of biodiversity for marine life in general, it’s no wonder that you can find extraordinary spectrum of deep sea creatures there too. Everything from deep sea corals to sea lilies, weird fish and squid are all well represented.
