Look at those cute third graders, all of them potential future reefers getting to play with a new toy serious piece of reef equipment. Apparently, Mr Rutherford is awesome, because his third grade class of higher learning has their very own reef tank, and they just scored a top of the line, recirculating Reef Dynamics external protein skimmer.
Heck we didn’t start reefing until the 7th grade and all we had was a Berlin skimmer. And while we were reading aquarium books at that time, these young’uns are “studying complex marine biology and chemistry, learning concepts previously thought to be far above their grade level”. We’ve seen plenty of reef tanks set up for middle and high school age students but this is one of the first we’ve seen in a primary school setting.
Unsurprisingly, the children love their reef tank and they take great pride in maintaining it. But reef tanks are not cheap and although they are setting a good foundation of water quality with their new skimmer, imagine all the cool stuff they could learn about light from a multicolor LED aquarium light, or what they could learn about genetics with some designer clownfish.
Check out the webpage for the entire class, and if your company would like to help Mr. Rutherford’s class with their reef aquarium needs, there is a request page on the website outlining some of the materials the class needs for the kids to keep getting some great educational mileage from the reef tank.
