Giant clams of the genus Tridacna and Hippopus come in a wide range of mantle colors and textures but of all the species, Tridacna maxima are some of the most diverse. At Tahiti in the South Pacific where Maxima clams are the only Tridacna to be found this species occurs in such abundance and diversity that you could practically paint a rainbow with their mantle colors.
Highlighting this feature of South Pacific Maxima clams is a new video from Tahiti Marine which highlights a nice big crop of this colorful bivalve showing its glory in a huge range of patterns and colors. Black maxima clams, multicolor maxima clams and even weirdo bicolor maximas are all originating from the center of diversity that is found around Tahiti and Tuamotu.
