The Isis Aquarium is an interesting aquarium design that popped up on Kickstarter last year. Instead of your traditional permutation of a box or the vertical cylinder, the Isis is a cylindrical aquarium that is put on its side.
Taking a horizontal approach gives you a unique look for this aquarium. From a novelty perspective, we like it although this design is probably not quite ready for prime time as full-fledged reef.
Simple in nature, the 25-gallon Isis was designed to be a simple aquarium that utilizes a stick on submersible filter. This could be ideal for a minimalist saltwater design or as a freshwater ecosystem.
There are three 4 x 8 in. access holes at the top to feed and maintain the aquarium and aid allow oxygen transfer. The simple design sits on wooden blocks, however a clever DIYer could create them out of other materials.
With a goal of $2,500 the project was funded to $2,800. We don’t know if these will really make an impact, but it is a unique conversation starter.
